Nauvoo, IL

Population: 1,105

Nauvoo is the site of the second Temple constructed by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, or Mormons. I know a few mormons, but was not aware that they had a site that was considered sacred to them. In fact there was a lot I didnt know about the Mormon people. Did you know they love to sing and dance? Well they do.

The Promise

Each year young Missionaries come from all across the country to perform in many shows put on by historical Nauvoo. The Promise is one those shows, and like all others it is free to the public. The musical portrays the daily life of Nauvoo Settlers who arrive to the area by wagon or riding up and down the Mississippi River on the Maiden of Iowa.

I spoke with Sister Greenwood of Texas, pictured here, after her performance. She feels blessed to be able to perform with such inspiring individuals and under God's guiding light. She arrived in early may for her three month mission to Nauvoo, and will be attending school in Utah come fall.

The first two and a half weeks of the Mission are spent learning, rehearsing, and practicing for the 10 shows that most of the Missionaries will be a part of. Sister Greenwood is featured in all except one. She struggled with dancing at first, but feels truly thankful to have been guided by her Lodrd and to be given the strength to do whatshe loves despite her hardships.

Nauvoo, IL

I do not consider myself faithful, but it was hard to leave Nauvoo without feeling a little inspired. If I can go forward with even an ounce of the spirit and kindness shown to me in the town, I feel each day will be brighter than the last. You don't have to be religious to understand that everyone is capable of song and dance.
