Bayfield, WI
Population: 487
Known for it's Annual Apple Festival, Bayfield is a great place to vacation during the later summer or early fall. You'll find plenty to do around town, as well as tons of water and outdoor activities. It felt similar to Saugatuck in terms of atmosphere, except the bay is defintely more bustling than the Kalamazoo River. Stop by and check out all the docked boats.
Eckels Pottery and Fine Craft Gallery - Dede and Rudy
Learning from her dad, Bob Eckels, in the original Pot Shop, Dede started her own business after The Pot Shop moved locations in 1960.
Each of the pieces she makes are functional and beautiful. She believes that art should be used every day, and it improves the quality of your life.
Most of her work takes on an earthy or natural color, giving the piece a distinct look.
She expanded the orignal store to house art by other local and international artists. You could spend hours going through the works of each artist.
If you are lucky you'll arrive on a day that Peter Skoro, a pottery artist featured in the shop, does one of his presentations on how they glaze and fire the bowls.
I missed the demonstration, but got a chance to say hi to Rudy, Eckels' ferocious guard dog. He gets paid in belly rubs and treats.
Erickson Orchards and Country Store - Fred
The Erickson Orchard has been in the family for over 100 years and 3 genreations of men. Fred is the current owner and manager of the Orchard after taking it over from his father, and his father before him.
The Orchard has 4000 fruit bearing trees, with some of the original trees still bearing bushels of fruit to this day. Fred believes that the attention he gives those trees is what keeps them so healthy after 100 plus years.
Originally Fred wanted nothing to do with the Orchard, and left to be a mechanic for 30 years. That time spent away made him realize how much he missed home, and also taught him how to be innovative.
His dad asked him to return to the Orchard to take over, and Fred came back. He brought with him all that he learned while away. Last year, Fred hosted Bayfield's Inaugural Strawberry Festival to great success. He's doing it again this year with even more attenddess and strawberries.
Bayfield's Waterfront Activity
Jet skis, swimming, sailing, you name it. If it can be done on the water, it can be done in bayfield. Even on a cloudy or foggy summer afternoon the bay will be bustiling with water traffic.
You can ride the ferry or rent jet skis, or fish off the docks and rocks that jut out into the water. I was content to soak my feet in the cold water after a long day of walking and carrying my backpack.
I defintely want to bring my friends back to this place.
Maggie's - Bayfield Burger
Apple Chutney and Goat Cheese on a burger?
Believe it or not, this was actually delicious. I was skeptical at first when I saw that apple chutney was going on my burger, but couldn't resist trying the "Bayfield" burger.
The atmosphere of Maggie's is also something spectacular. It is filled with 100's of pink flamingos.
There are more authentic placses to dine along the coast of Bayfield, however I would stop by Maggie's just to get a few photos with the flamingos.
Bayfield, WI
The kind of place where you can't help but be happy. The weather was absolutely terrible the entire time I was there, however I was hardly upset about it. I found myself smiling as I watched the water craft from the dock, rain drops dripping from the hood of my coat. A little water never hurt anybody, and it might actually be the key to happiness. So go find some in Bayfield.
